My summer studio is located near Kenora, and my painting projects there invariably focus on granite outcrops, lakes, and coniferous forests. There has been considerable evolution in my paintings of the Canadian Shield. Acknowledging the considerable beauty of the region, I have nevertheless grown to reject the more colourful and romantic interpretations of some other artists. This painting is not the warm and welcoming country so much beloved by tourists and cottagers. It has a wild, brooding and ominous character which challenges and defies human intrusion. If you find my Shield landscape silent, aloof and somewhat dangerous, then I have been successful.
